Why Social Media are not accountable for what they publish?

It seems age is an important factor to access 'adult' content online, though in reality anyone can click and access anything. My question is not on the target recipient (adult or kid) but on the content itself and the effects that it could trigger on the average person. Let's take the example of a terror propaganda. Recently the UK government approved a law about 'thought crime', so when a guy click the wrong link, he could face significant charges (up to 15 years in prison). I think this is an important step that recognize thoughts may trigger actions accordingly. In case of terrorism an action could be hate speech or mass shooting.

So my point is that we should focus on the content and its capability to corrupt the mind, rather than on the target individual. I think that if something is offensive, or harmful it remain so, whatever the target.

Let's consider another example. In India recently we've seen cases of rapes at an industrial scale which didn't exist a decade ago. In my view the reason is mostly due to the media and the diffusion of 'adult' content online.

Until we realize that 'adult content', is actually 'harmful content', it will be difficult to build and maintain a healthy society based on human values. Invariably 'harmful content' will harm, corrupt the mind and the actions of the individual. As we say clearly 'tobacco kills' on each pack of cigarettes, I think 'harmful content' should be banned as toxic. Everyday our society provides evidence of this. A person abused is like a dead person, and many will seek suicide rather than living with that violence inside.

Social media should be held accountable of the content they publish.

If it's impossible to clean up every post and remove 'toxic' content (AI algorithms can help), then Mr. Facebook and Mr. Google should pay the victims for the offense resulted in toxic content published on their platforms.

Everyone should be accountable for crimes against the individual, including 'thought crimes' no matter who they are.
